De-Lurking: It's Not Just For Breakfast Anymore

Eden did it. So did Pete. And now, because I can be frighteningly sheep-like at times with the originality of a Hollywood producer, I'm doing it. "It," of course, is observing National De-Lurking Week. Granted, technically it was last week, but I'm just getting around to it.

Anyway, what is De-Lurking? Simple: there's a lot of people who read others' blogs who just read, but either never comment at all (i.e., "lurk"), or only comment once in a blue moon. De-Lurking is the process by which we bloggers appeal to the better angels of these lurkers' nature, and ask them to expose themselves. NO, not that way! (Well, maybe.... depends on what you look like, I guess.)

Granted, I don't have the readership that I did pre-hiatus, nor do I come close to Pete-like or Eden-like audience levels... but Site Meter tells me that there's a few of you coming in regulalry who haven't sounded off. So today, let us know you're here. Say hello. Tell me your favorite song, or what the weather's like today where you are. Just say something. Please. De-Lurk. Your mother would want you to. It will make you run faster and jump higher. It's good for your libido.

Hi. I'm listening to Chocolate Genius Inc. and the sun is shining. But it's cold. And I'm getting ice crem later.

Alright, you caught me. I found your blog about a month ago and now routinely lurk-- not because I'm overly liberal or because you're overly insightful (and frankly, you've got to raise your age limit on girls who you find hot, anything against girls over the age of 21?)-- but I am amused. I'll get better at commenting since the term "lurker" has too much of a "stalker" connotation for me.

Posted by: maeby at January 16, 2006 10:06 AM

Sarah - despite your kicking off the current round of Mudge-bashing, I really appreciate you coming here and reading, and for always adding lively comments, and for starting your blog after reading mine a couple of years ago... still the highest compliment I've been paid in the blog world, having someone cite me as their inspiration to start. Thanks!

Maeby - first of all, welcome, and thanks for reading. I appreciate it.

I've never promised insight, btw... just semi-rational rants. ;-)

Re: the 21 yr old thing, it's total coincidence. Sasha Cohen just happened to be in the news this week. As for older women, my experience with 30somethings has been, well, unfortunate -- but I do date women my own age most of the time, believe it or not. Really. I swear.

Lurking, stalking, whatever... I'm just glad that people read! I'm glad you've been coming by over the last month -- and I hope you'll keep coming back for more insight-free, slightly creepy 21 year old obsessive blogging. ;-) Seriously, welcome to the community, and thanks again! -- Mudge

I don't comment all that often, but I'm reading.

Sigh... you caught me. Good news... Nicole is now taller than Doc. She is 42 inches tall. ;-)h

There's nothing like a comment, even if it's just a "boo-yah" delurking comment, to make a blogger's day.

Boo-yah!

You caught me too. I've been reading your blog ever since you started the countdown to my 18th birthday. I so do wish you'd post a picture of yourself so I could see it. Hope to see you around NYC sometime!

Careful what your wish for, Ashley...

HELLO, DAMMIT!

Posted by: Margo at January 16, 2006 07:45 PM

My favorite song is somewhere between "A Whiter shade of pale" and the humpty dance. the weather is irksome and finger breakingly cold.

I don't lurk, I leak.

I also happen to be exposing myself right now.

Posted by: thebeav at January 16, 2006 07:47 PM

Susan - thank you for reading! I still drop by Strange Pulse as well... saw your story today about meeting your husband at a Cure concert. I appreciate you coming by!

Shari - my underappreciated friend who always keeps me out of trouble with the procedural police, and who never gets IM love from me. I still remember when Nicole was just a baby -- we've known each other for way too long, I think I was 16 when you met me. I still remember when Doc was just 41 inches tall as well... because it was yesterday.

Eden - and here I didn't get you anything! I didn't comment on your lurking post because I thought you knew I always read... now I feel bad. Booyah to you too! (Is that a youtooyah?)

"Ashley" -- nice try, Doc. Assface. ;-)

Cous -- Thanks for playing along with Doc. Assface. ;-)

Margo -- I *knew* you'd be here! Actually, I didn't... but I'm not surprised, now that I know. You have to come say hi the next time you're in my building. (You know where I sit.)

Beav -- somehow, I'm strangely aroused right now. Strange mostly because it was the Humpty Dance and not the exposing yourself that did it. ;-)

I say hello all the time, but I'll say hello again. Hello.

Posted by: Jill at January 16, 2006 09:55 PM

Mudge,

I read this because I like how you think about a lot of things -- although I try to overlook your obsessive attraction to women who are younger than my daughter. I also like telling people you worked for me before you were a big (and I mean BIG) media star.

Keep up the good thinking and writing. You provide fuel for many of my best anti-war rants.

Hello Mudge,

I read your blog all the time. I started to comment a few times, but my comments were becoming verbose. Eden and I often discuss your blog. I'll try not to lurk so much, and maybe even blog every now and then.

As for my favorite song, where to begin. There are too many songs, from so many styles that picking one would be impossible. I can pick a favorite artist and that would be The Beatles. I can't say that the hype of Beatlemania influenced me, as The Beatles broke up two months before I was born. I suppose that could be a blog topic if I ever got around to it.

Jill - You've no idea how flattered I am that you read and say hello all the time. As insecure as I get when I run into someone who's a more creative writer than I am, it mitigates things to have you coming by and saying hello. Thank you for reading... and Hello, Jill. (Now I feel like the gentleman on your site.)

Scott - Man, I am never going to live down that photo, am I? Yes, everyone, for the record, I once worked for Scott. There is no truth to the rumor that the experience nearly ended his career, however. After all, he's still around to rant about the war, is he not? Thanks for reading and for lernin' me how teh rite like dem big boys in dem fancy offices.

Hawk - You spoke! ;-) Really glad that you come by to read ... and please don't worry about censoring yourself or rambling (heck, I've made it an art!)... comment any time you like. Congratulations on baby Holden, and I hope you'll do a few more frequent blog posts.

Your building? For the record, I was there every day (and night and weekend) for the past two weeks. Remember, you saw me in the hallways a few times? But, I'm slackin' this week... working from home. ;-)

Be careful what you say, and how you say it. You never know when Curmymom is listening.

Posted by: curmymom at January 18, 2006 07:18 PM

You caught me. I'm an old regular from last year. I've enjoyed your Blog for nearly two years. I've always respected your opinions and really enjoyed your writing and take on life, even if I don't sit on the left. During the election, you and the SpinDoc had "enough" of my takes so I quietly and politely faded away to the corner, but I never stopped reading. After all this time, I feel like I know you as a friend. My favorite music at the moment is a new upstart contemporary funky jazz group called Josh Dion Band. He'll be in The Village Feb 4th and so will I. You would love the vocals and the complex music (it's Steely Dan meets Stevie Wonder/Brothers Johnson). He has one CD "Give Love" but the live show is unforgetable. I saw him last month in Mexicali Blues Cafe in NJ.

I'm de-lurking now. But only to say that I am going to run past you guys at the Philly 8K race and straight to Maney's. Hell, I might even drink one on my last lap around you guys.
